Exiting the museum, Jack and Andrés descended the stairs together and followed the pavement towards an enormous pool. It was picture perfect, an octagon complete with cascading fountains rising high above them, their spray falling to create sparkling ripples over the waterâs surface. The glorious sunshine had enticed picnickers to the gardens and today it was surrounded by people, some feeding bread to the snow-white swans drifting majestically across the water, others sitting along the edges enjoying the warmth of the day and watching small children under the watchful eye of their nannies, running along the pools edges, guiding colourful yachts with long poles.
Beside Jack and Andrés, two small boys, charmingly dressed in identical shorts, white caps and navy-blue jackets, each complete with a row of neat red buttons, set up a loud wailing as the buxom lady accompanying them removed their yacht from the water and demanded that they follow her, aussitôt. Winking at Jack, Andrés leapt forward, landing on his hands and walking for a dozen or more steps before righting himself directly in front of the suddenly attentive boys.
âCould you help me, messieurs?â he asked them. âI have lost my way and I donât know where is up and where is down.â Andrésâ forlorn expression and comical hand gestures immediately had the boys laughing hysterically.
âWhy, up is there,â replied one, pointing to the sky.
Andrés gazed up and with sadness in his voice, asked, âBut how will I ever get there?â
Jack joined in the laughter of the boys, whose tears were now forgotten. Following Andrés through the gardens, he was so glad that he had met this new friend with the contemplative air and thoughtful conversation that seemed at such odds with his haphazard appearance and spontaneous humour.
